It’s the beginning of the weekend for most of us and what a better way to start it than to get your affairs in order. There’s a lot that’s been going on lately. Things like getting that education and building your persona. With that being said, this week on #Smiley’sWorld I introduce you to a very talented and interesting rapper who hails all the way from Mkhuhlu. He makes the art of rapping look so effortless. Still don’t know who I’m talking about? When I first heard of this guy from Mal-G a year ago, I thought he was just another bluff who’s trying to get some credit by giving us unworthy material. But I was wrong. And that’s until I met him in person this year and actually got to see him in action in front of the mic. I won’t lie, he’s just what this industry needs to put other rappers on their toes. He sounded like someone who dropped from the sky on a hot summer’s day. You just can’t get enough of him.

Ladies and gentleman. I present to you on #Smiley’sWorld, Triff-Irap. It all started while he was watching Tv, seeing people like 50cent and The Game flex their bars. “I always wanted to be like them so bad”, he says. Straight after that he started writing lyrics in the 9th grade, which was back in 2012. And in 2013 he then presented his music to the masses.

His biggest influences includes people like, Big Sean and Meek Mill, whom he says taught him a thing or two about music and the lifestyle around it. He’s currently working on a new EP titled ‘46’, which features a song that’s out already and available for download titled ‘All I wannet’ that features another rapper also from his hood called Colly. And the song is apparently picking up some heat. He’s determined to stick around and make a difference in this art. That’s why 5 years ago he was just a lost soul trying to find himself in his first year of high school. 5 years from now he sees himself on top of things and on the edge. Nothing less.

He says that when he started out, he never wanted to sound like anybody else in the game but to stay true to himself. With his raps most especially. “Most of these kats are trying to be like someone who’s already influenced the game, listeners need a fresh new artist and not another AKA imitation”, he says. He’s worked with other influential people such as producers like Flame-C, who produced for iFani; Zooci Coke Dope, who produced for Blaklez, K2, Big Star Johnson and Ex-Global. “I have a project lined up in the near future up with a big artist, but I’m not gonna bust the bubble just yet”, says Triff. He says that he’s currently listening to a lot of Tory Lanez, Big Sean, G-Eazy, Meek Mill, Sylavan Lacue, and Logic. His song favourite at the moment being a song titled ‘Caravan 04’ by Sylavan Lacue ft Linzi Jai.

He says that if he were to change game right now, he’d give other young up and coming artists just like him the platform to keep going, because he understands that it’s very difficult to breakthrough into the music industry without any financial backing. He’s yet to earn his stripes in this game, that’s why he’s met and made friends with A-List artists and producers who really love his work and want to let it go commercial. His advice to other young, up and coming artists like him is firstly to understand that the game isn’t cut out for everyone. “You need to be dedicated and actually put in the work where it matters. You’ll need to sacrifice in order to penetrate deeper into the industry. And lastly, surround yourself with other like-minded people who have the same vision as you that will want to put your material out there, and don’t let anybody tell you that you won’t be relevant just because you’re from the townships” he says.
